Australia’s education ministers are preparing to pore over poor academic results at a meeting in Alice Springs.

Federal, state and territory ministers will dissect the declining reading, maths and science skills of Australian students during a day-long meeting on Wednesday.

Federal Education Minister Dan Tehan has seized on the sliding results to convince his counterparts to slash the national syllabus.

“Teachers and principals tell me the current curriculum is overcrowded,” he told AAP ahead of the meeting.

“Central to improving student outcomes must involve refocusing on literacy and numeracy and de-cluttering the curriculum.”

The ministers will also discuss school funding, phonics methods for reading and writing, as well as red tape burdening teachers.
