WHAT WAS CLAIMED

SBS News reported that Labor minister Clare O'Neil called One Nation voters “unintelligent”.

OUR VERDICT

False. The supposed news report is fake.

AAP FACTCHECK - The Labor government minister did not call One Nation voters "unintelligent" people who likely went to public school, despite claims online.

An apparent screenshot of an SBS News report about Housing Minister Clare O'Neil making those comments is fabricated.

The claim is in Facebook and Instagram posts featuring a purported screenshot of an SBS report dated "June 28, 2026".

"Housing Minister O'Neil says One Nation voters are 'unintelligent' & likely went to 'public school'," the headline reads.

A standfirst reads: "Housing Minister Clare O'Neil has ignited controversy with her recent remarks regarding the demographics of One Nation supporters".

However, a Google search for mentions of Ms O'Neil's name on the SBS website on June 28 returns no results.

There's also no evidence of the supposed report in the SBS homepage archives around that date or on the SBS News TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube or X accounts.

The comments also don't appear in Ms O'Neil's media interview transcripts, parliament's Hansard records, or on her Facebook, Instagram, X and TikTok accounts.

The post includes an image of O'Neil that appears to have been taken from a Facebook video she posted in May 2026 about government welfare and permanent residents.

The original clip did not mention One Nation.
