WHAT WAS CLAIMED

A video shows a Muslim man complaining about Australian toilets.

OUR VERDICT

False. The video has been generated using artificial intelligence (AI).

AAP FACTCHECK - A video showing a Muslim man complaining about Australian toilet facilities is AI-generated.

The clip, which has amassed more than two million views and thousands of comments, contains an invisible watermark confirming it is a digital creation.

The video appears to show an Afghan man washing his feet in a public restroom's hand basin.

"These public toilets are not good for Muslims," he says.

"The Australia (sic) needs to do a better job accommodating its Muslim population."

The man in the video is referring to the Islamic cleansing rituals that involve washing specific body parts, including the feet, before prayer.

Some airports and public spaces have dedicated areas for Wudu and prayer.

However, the video has been generated using artificial intelligence (AI).

Searching Google Images using a still from the video reveals it contains a hidden digital watermark indicating it was "Made with Google AI."

While there are no obvious errors common to synthetic content, there are several visual signs suggesting AI was used to create the clip.

A woman's reflection in the bathroom mirror (timestamp five seconds) is inconsistent with what's occurring in the background.

A man walking outside the public restroom appears to be dragging his suitcase without holding it.

Seconds later, he appears to be holding it with his left hand.

The people appear realistic but exhibit common signs of AI-generated content, including unnaturally smooth skin and imperfect lip-syncing.

Also, the man talks about Australia, but the subtitles quote him as referring to the UK.

AAP FactCheck has previously debunked posts from the same Facebook page, Inside Australia.

Despite its name, the account's Facebook transparency details show it is operated by a user in Sri Lanka.

The page has published several AI-generated clips in which immigrants demand special treatment from the Australian government.

AAP FactCheck found near identical versions of the bathroom video on other Facebook pages, in which an Afghan man complains about the lack of washing facilities in the UK and in Japan

Another page that posts anti-immigration AI content targeting the UK is also managed from Sri Lanka. (AAP/Facebook)

The UK version of the clip was posted by the UK Diaries Facebook page, which focuses on anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim content.

Despite its name, the page is also operated by a user in Sri Lanka.
